Death must be paid, He became the sacrifice.
They laughed, they mocked as the lashes struck.
He cries in pain for the things we've done.
Could you see His love with each strike?
The way the whip ripped His flesh just for us.

Nailed to the cross, both hands, both feet.
A crown of thorns, His royal mockery.
'Crucify Him.' We yelled to the soldiers.
The cross came up for Him to hang.
We watched with contentment-
For our evil hearts to be seen.
The innocent Lamb, our sacrifice.

"Father forgive them, for they-
know not what they do."
Those were His last words,
For God to forgive us of our evil.
But why, I wonder, would He do such a deed?
With His finale breath 'It is finished.'

Darkness fell.

Thunder crashed, the earth shook.
The veil was torn in half.
People ran, people screamed.
But few stood to stare.
One soldier repented,
For he saw the Son of God.

Death could not hold Him,
Three days slipped away,
The tomb was opened,
The burial cloth lay empty.
The Son of God rose from the dead.

Now we wait in wonder,
For the coming of our King.
Clothed in splendorous white.
He rides on the winds of Heaven,
Coming to our rescue once and for all.

Written for the sixth day of the National Poetry Writing Month.

Also, I wrote it for :iconchristians: on going contest Death can't hold me down. which ends on Easter Sunday.

You can find the death of Jesus in John chapter 19.

This is the true meaning of Easter, not the easter eggs or the candy or any of that kid stuff. The real meaning of Easter is the rising of our King Jesus. He is the center of 'Good Friday.' For His sacrifice wasn't just for a select few people who truly believe in Him, no, His sacrifice was for every single person on this planet. EVERYONE. But it's your choice to believe, to accept Him and God or not to. But I promise you, no one will ever make that kind of sacrifice for you like He did, no one will EVER love you the way He loves you.
Can you grasp that? Loving someone so much to be whipped, mocked, nailed to a cross with a crown of THORNS? (And those aren't small thorns, these are thick at least one-two inch thorns being dug into His head.)
That's love.
But He's not dead, for death could not hold Him. He rose to Heaven, where He sits at our Father's Throne.

My goodness.... such DEPTH of the Holy Spirit you have, Jamie! The only thing I would say is slow down on your typing. Not the "vile" that was torn in half, but, the "veil". That would be in the fourth paragraph. Yes, I am being REALLY picky (but cyberdads can do that!) Other then that MINISCULE thing.... your writing skills are over the top! (I can't believe they need a 100 word minimum on these critiques) I would say one final thing to you, Jamie.... it's really difficult for little old me to improve upon your perfection. Happy Easter to you and your family! Come to think of it, Jesus is not only the reason for the Christmas season. He's the reason for Easter as well!
